Catfishing - Important Information You Should Know

Knowing what to use and where is key in catfishing. The specific bait and where you are fishing it is vital. Other determing factors in your success will be the weather and at what time you are fishing. If it is hot, chances are the bite is going to be slow. The early morning and evening hours are most notably the best time to catch catfish.

The most commonly sought after catfish in the United States is the Channel Cat. They are regularly caught in most bodies of water. Rivers, lakes and ponds are literally full of them.

The most popular bait for Channels is worms, or more specifically, nightcrawlers. Channels bite better when it's cool outside, but usually can be caught at most times of the day depending on where you are fishing, and with what bait.

Other popular baits include, liver, shad, guts or sides, and prepared dough baits. The most rank of baits will usually get you results with Channel Cats. They are avid feeders on just about everything. They tend to feed more heavily during or after heavy rain. Places that have inflow after a rain are really good for catching Channels, as there are things washing in that they feed on. If you know a body of water with a river or creek running into a pond or lake, this can be an excellent place to catch them after it rains.

The Flathead catfish is another highly sought after fish. They are mainly fished because of their sheer size. Trophy Flatheads of 80 pounds or more are known to be caught. They are a little bit more of a challenge, because they are regarded as nocturnal predators. Meaning, they feed at night mostly on live bait. Perch, goldfish and shad are some of the best baits to use when going after Flatheads. Limb and trotling are the more traditional methods, but pole fishing has been making an upward climb as of late.

Every catfishermen wants one of those trophy Flatheads. Flatheads are also know to reside in hard to reach places, such as in logjams, or a body of water that isn't easily accessed. They are also very territorial, meaning they like to stay mostly in one spot, but are known to travel up to a mile at night when feeding. Your best bet at catching one of the brutes is to find a logjam or some type of obstruction, and wait until the evening and nighttime hours to go after one of these fish.

Blue Cat or aka the White Cat is the most heavily commercially fished of the catfish species in the United States. They are loved by fishermen because of their size, raw power, and active feeding habits. It is not uncommon for them to feed three or four times a day, and another two or three times a night. They prefer deep water as opposed to shallow, and running water is usually a plus. The most popular baits for Blue Cats are shad, cutbaits and perch. Notably the most preferred bait is taking a shad and cutting it into "chunks". The scent from the opened and bleeding shad attract Blue Cats quite well. They usually are caught in deep water in the daytime. At night they can be caught just about anywhere, but shallow water with cut shad, or a live bait will usually yield you results. It is not uncommon for Blue Cats to get to over eighty pounds in weight. The record set last year was over 120 pounds.

Bullheads are another type of catfish in North America. They are mainly fished because of their tasty meat. They can be caught in almost any type of farm pond. A popular bait for Bullheads are nightcrawlers. Usually when you catch one Bullhead, chances are you will catch more there. You can regularly catch them in the late afternoon hours. On an overcast day with worms, will usually get you good results, depending on whether the location you are at has Bullheads.

1. For trout fishing, the leader should not be greased. It will not sink far enough to cause any difficulty when picking the line and lure from the water, but if it is allowed to float; it will cast a shadow on the bottom of the stream which may scare the trout.

2. The trout is one of the fishes that are usually secured through the use of the dry fly. For trout, the current as well as the pools should be fished. It may sometimes be a bit difficult to keep the fly from sinking or dragging because of the various conditions of the current, but this is a matter that the angler will have to figure out for himself.

3. It is not good practice when fishing for trout to fish directly upstream so the flies, line, and leader will float directly over fish. The fisherman should make the cast from one side of the stream so the fly will only float over the fish.

4. It is important to make the first cast the best. A feeding trout will usually strike the first lure presented if it is cast so that it will float over his private domain. The angler should never fail to fish the lower end of the pool first even if the trout are rising in the middle or upper end.

5. Trout are sometimes very moody or selective and will try the patience of any angler; hence, possibly a fly with less hackle will do the trick or it may be necessary to use a spent-wing fly or a fan wing.

Indeed, catching trout fishes can be lots of fun. The anglers just have to remember these tips in order to have a happy catch.

When we went fishing, my Dad taught me that to catch different kinds of fish, you needed to use different kinds of bait. Marketing online also requires you to use a variety of "bait", depending on the kind of "fish" you want to catch.

Your ads are your bait and you will need to use different ads to attract different customers. Writing ads is a skill you will definitely want to master before you "go fishing".

Some of them the experts would love and some they would hate. But, depending on where they are placed, they all work.

When you go fishing, you also learn that you can't simply bait the hook and throw it into the water and then just sit there. My Dad taught me how to "jiggle" the bait, cast it out and reel it back in, "drag" the bottom, and numerous other techniques to get the fish to bite. In your online marketing youll also have to apply some techniques to get your customers to bite.

You cannot simply write some ads and throw them around in a few places. You'll want to try different marketing techniques including banner ads, e-zine ads, classifieds ads, traffic generators, search engine submission, pay-per-click, and even FFA posting. And don't forget, you can use free advertising to test out the new "bait" and new "fishing techniques".

Sounds like a lot of work, doesn't it? So why bother? For the same reason you keep going fishing. You know those fish are out there, and it's just a matter of time before you "hook" the BIG one!

They want your talent, your network and most of all, they want
your marketing capabilities. Fraud. It's the crime of the times,
so what does that have to do with you?

The United States continues to be plagued as the investment
fraud capital of the world. Savvy network marketers and
MLM'ers continue to be caught in the under currents of the
investment fraudsters wave. Have no doubt in your mind
these people are pros. They are charming, charismatic,
intelligent and very 'likeable'.... that is until you realize what
they have done to you.

Network marketers and MLM'ers are being targeted by these
Pros in order to market and sell their financially appealing
'opportunities'. Investment opportunities in FOREX trades, High
Yield Investments, Trading Programs, Promissory Notes and

They want you to get out there and spread the magic. So you do.
I mean after all, they were offering huge commission checks,
and you are not adverse to some free thinking and non-regulated
investment - the commissions alone would set you and your
family up for life. This is it, this is the one... the opportunity you
have been waiting for. You knew that if you kept on working hard,
the right opportunity would come your way. And here it is,
at last...

It is because you are so good at what you do that you have been
targeted to play in their game. They need someone who can
really sell, some worker bee's to go and generate more honey
for them. Everything looks in order, they have the flashy car, the
money and a $5,000 suit to match. They also say they have the
contacts in the financial world that everyone wants to know.

There are a multitude of ways they will drag you in, all
involve substantial financial reward for you... don't be tempted.
Check them out, see who they are, at the very least run a
background check on them... do they come from where they say
they come from? Follow up on those stories they told you, and
put together the inconguencies for yourself. Keep an open mind.

And most of all be prepared for their answers. They have
answers, for everything. They'll tell you that you are too
suspicious, 'do you know how lucky you are to be a part of this?
It's only open to a select few'. If you start to bang the drum too loudly, they'll kick you out of their set-up...You're too much
trouble.

Being alert and listening to your instincts, those nagging doubts,
can save you immeasurable heartache down the road.
The reality is that these people will create a whirlwind, gather
the money and disappear. They leave you to face the FBI,
the civil suits, the angry investors who have lost their entire
savings. You even got your parents to invest their 401k, and
they lost it all... and you, well not only do you suffer the financial
devastation of being looped by the con, your reputation is mud
and the network you have cultivated over many years no longer
trusts you. You end up in the marketers graveyard.

Be alert, check them out and follow up... then confront them with
your findings. Most of all, listen and really "hear" the answer.
You are investing in yourself, and your future...

Night Fishing Preparation, The Key To Success

Preparation is the Key To Successful Night Fishing, You Better Have These...

Night fishing requires quite a bit more preparation than daytime fishing does. Even if you "think" you know the waters pretty well, you need to take extra precautions when fishing at night.

If you are night fishing from a boat, you have even more to think about. Make sure you have enough flotation devices onboard and that they are easily accessible. If someone falls overboard, it is much more difficult to see them at night, so you need to be able to throw a flotation device out to them quickly.

Proper lighting on your boat is also essential. Enough flashlights and batteries should be an obvious commodity, but you would be surprised how many times those batteries that you "thought" were new, die off within minutes of the trip.

You should have a GPS monitor at all times (good compasses are better than nothing if you can't afford a GPS). However, don't go out and buy a GPS right before your first night-fishing voyage. Buy one in advance and learn how to use it first! Trust me, it is no fun trying to read the manual when it's pitch dark and you're lost.

Not only are the tree stumps harder to see at night, so are the shallow waters. It definitely pays to learn the waters well before heading out at night.

Before you venture out into the darkness, make sure you let someone know (back onshore) where you are going or are planning to go. If you aren't back home at a specific time you suggest, at least others will know where to start looking for you.

It's also a good idea to pack your insect repellant. Night fishing not only brings out the best fish, but also the meanest bugs. It's prime feeding time for many insects, and to them, you look pretty tasty on that open water.

Prepare your rods, reels and lures BEFORE you hit the water. There is nothing worse than getting out in the water and realizing you forgot to bring your favorite lure.

A little nap during the afternoon before you head out is also a good idea. Of course, if you are catching a lot, I doubt you will be tempted to doze off.

And remember, safety always comes first. I am yet to see a fish worth getting seriously injured or killed over.

The Importance Of Your Fishing Rod

Many anglers seem to overlook the importance of their fishing rod. Having a decent rod is very important. You rod helps you detect bites, set the hook, and then fight the fish. If you have a sub par fishing rod you simply wont catch as many fish as you should. For example, the airline once lost my friends fishing rod case that contained his ultra light fishing rod. It was a rod he had been using for more than ten years and was very familiar with it. We had to go to an unfamiliar store to replace the rod seeing as how the airline was going to send his bag back home, and my friend was without a rod. He bought the only ultralight rod that he could find in that particular store, and he fished with it for the next few days. I out fished him 3 to 1, and our catch rate was normally fairly equal. The only difference was the fishing rod. Once we returned home and he had his original rod back, he has never used the one he had to buy in a pinch again.

The point to that story is that the one he had to buy so that he could fish, wasn't nearly as good a rod as the original. His biggest complaint the entire trip was that the replacement was too "whippy". He couldn't set the hook. If you've never had the pleasure, this fact is true. If your rod has the stiffness of a whip, you can't set the hook to save your life. Bites are difficult to feel as well if you rod is whip like. In order to set the hook properly your rod must have some backbone (stiffness) to it.

Does this mean that you have to find the one perfect fishing rod on this planet and then pay hundreds of dollars for it? No not at all. A very serviceable fishing rod can normally be found for $50 or less. I personally love the Quantum X-tra lite rod series for ultralight fishing. And these rods are extremely affordable. Normally they are less that $50 and quality and durable. I've had the three that I have for over five years with no problems. Actually the car door got a hold of one of them a couple of years ago and I had to get a new one. Slamming the car door on my fishing rod is obviously my fault and says nothing about the quality of the rod.
The bottom line is that an anglers fishing rods are often overlooked as secondary to the fish catching process and they shouldn't be. Spend a little time finding the types of fishing rods that feel right and perform well for you. This will pay dividends in the future. And remember, you should be able to find nice fishing rods that can be used for most freshwater fishing situations for $50 or less each. In my experience it isn't at all necessary to break the bank buying your next fishing rod.

Fishing Reel - Important Tips

Many Anglers overlook their fishing reel from year to year. They simply throw their whole rib into a closet or leave it in the back of their vehicle all year long. Then when fishing season rolls around again, they grab their rig and go. Neglecting your fishing reel like this can cause big performance problems, and performance problems are not what you want while you're out fishing. Believe me, I know this from experience. If you take a few minutes after every fishing trip, and an hour of so a year, your fishing reel will stay in great shape and last for many years :

Wipe It Down - after every fishing excursion, take a minute or two to wipe your fishing reel down with a clean cloth. Just wiping the outside of the reel like this removes any dirt of sand that might have gotten on your rod while fishing. Over time, this can build up and cause problems.

Change Your Line - this tip is especially true with monofilament line, which is what I use. Some people will go for an entire fishing season without changing their fishing line. This amazes me. As an example, I change my line once a month or so during fishing season. The "fresher" your fishing line is the less resistance it provides for the fishing reel. Not only this, but the older the line, the more it will coil, and the less strong it will be.

Setting The Drag - You want your drag set tight enough for a hook set, but loose enough to come off of the fishing reel easily. Just pull the line off of the reel with your hand before throwing your first cast. If it pulls off fairly easily with a decent amount of resistance, it should be fine. After the hook set, adjust the drag accordingly. The drag on your fishing reel isn't like that chicken cooker. You don't just "set it and forget it". The drag on your reel should be adjusted as you feel the size of the fish.

A Spring Cleaning - At least once a year your fishing reel should be taken apart and cleaned and greased. This simple step, which takes about an hour of your time, will add years to the life of your fishing reel. Do a search for "fishing reel maintenance" to get instructions if needed, but the bottom line is that your fishing reel should be cleaned and greased at least once a year.

These simple tips will add years to the life of your fishing reels, and help their performance as well. The last thing you want to have happen is for your reel to not work properly when you happen to be fighting the fish of a lifetime. I've had my reel not work, while fighting a fish like this and let me tell you something, it's no fun at all. If there were any children within earshot of my screaming on that day they're still scarred. I was not a happy camper, or should I say angler. Just remember these simple tips and nothing like what happened to me will ever happen to you.

If not, it's time you did some thinking about it. Fishing is relaxing and it gets you out into the beautiful great outdoors where you feel as if you're one with nature. (Now I know you like that idea.) I find that there's nothing as great as sitting on the bank of a creek under a willow tree and leaving the stress of the world behind. This alone can add years to your life. There is also the exercise you get from walking to the fishing spot. I personally don't care much for just exercising to be exercising but a brisk walk to a fishing hole is great. It's balm for the soul and in today's stressful world, it's a great way to let off a little steam. It's also a great hobby for those of all ages. Kids love to fish, so after you've been out a few times, take a kid along for a day of fishing fun. You will find a great deal of joy in introducing a kid to the joy of fishing.

If you've never tried fishing, you don't know what you're missing. Not only does it bring you closer to nature, there's the thrill of the catch. You simply can't imagine the thrill of standing on the bank of a pond or stream, your rod bending under the weight of a good catch. This one's a fighter and you take your time, allowing the fish to tire itself out before reeling it into shore. When you finally land it, you realize you've just caught the biggest fish of your life. It's an awesome feeling and one you'll never know unless you give fishing a try. You could try Fly Fishing in a rushing cold water stream. I know you have seen video or pictures and wondered what that would be like. How about a trip to Alaska and do some Salmon fishing, where the big ones are, and again the beautiful nature that would surround you.

- Do your research on the sport of fishing. The local library has many how-to books and fishing magazines. There are many resources in the library that will help educate you on the sport of fishing.

- Go online. There are hundreds of websites that give instructions on fishing gear, baits and where and when to fish and where to find the species you are aiming for.

- Family members or friends who are avid angler get them to take you along the next time they go fishing, experience is a good teacher. For this you will need some basic equipment, rod, reel, hooks and bait. Do not buy a lot of expensive gear until you determine whether or not you enjoy fishing.

- If you wish to take professional fishing lessons, check with guide services and fishing stores in your area. They can often provide you with the names of professionals who will teach you how to fish.

- Check with your local Conservation or wildlife service. Often there is a fishing day where beginners gather to learn the basics of fishing.

There is not a bad time to fish and you never know what you might catch. Certain species are more active near dawn and dusk when they feed. Others will bite any time of the day. Some species are more active at certain times of the year, but really you can fish all year round. If you live in a climate that has four seasons, you might consider taking up ice fishing at some point. Really the time of year you should fish all depends on the species you are after.

Fishing licenses are required in most locations. These can be purchased at fishing tackle stores, Conservation and Wildlife Services. Cost varies by location. Fishing licenses are not usually required for children. Check always the regulations. If you are planning to fish on private property, be sure to get permission from the owner. Entering someone's property to fish without permission is classed as trespassing. Be courteous and if permission is denied, move on.

If you follow the advice in this article, you will soon be enjoying fishing as a sport or hobby. If you enjoy the sport initially, you can hone your skills and move on to more advanced techniques and fishing tournaments.

Fly Fishing For Trout

Fly Fishing is such a traditional sport many refer to as an art form, and compared to other modes of fishing, incorporates so much to learn in terms of casting technique, and more particularly the study of the trout's diet, and their imitations, that it can distract anglers from focussing sufficiently on their quarry's habits and behaviour. If you want to catch more Trout, and particularly larger Trout, you need to know more about the Trout than you do about casting and their diet.

The deeper I looked, the more things just didn't make sense. I reared both Brown and Rainbow Trout in my lounge room aquarium and studied them closely. From atop steep banks of clear pools on the stream, I experimented and studied them.

There was finally but one conclusion I could make. We, as fly fishermen, to a large degree, have been kidding ourselves for a very long time. Looking realistically at many of the trout flies, it seemed that the trout must either be half blind, or quite stupid, to accept many of them as the insects being imitated. Either way, it detracted from the achievement of having deceived them.

The more I critically analyzed the whole routine of fly fishing, the more assumptions I recognised as having been made to compensate for our lack of understanding. At best, some of the assumptions may have been correct to some degree, but could never be proven or confirmed. At worst, some were just blatantly wrong.

These assumptions have been cycled for so long they have just been accepted as fact. The Trout have been considered 'Unpredictable' because their behaviour or actions didn't always fit what we would have expected when fly fishing. No-one, it seems, had ever thought about the possibility of their actions not matching our expectations because our beliefs could be flawed.

I started evaluating alternative possibilities. Gradually I put the puzzle together. Eventually, those long standing questions had answers. The trout behaviour then became extremely predictable. I started taking advantage of these findings. Having realized I didn't need to imitate anything to induce takes, I was able to construct flies which could do specific jobs for me rather than imitating anything.

With each of the situations I encountered on the water mastered, the results just automatically followed. I had seemingly mastered the sport of fly fishing.

How Can You Fish Without a Real Fishing Pole?

As a young girl, the only other kid in the neighborhood I had to play with was a boy my age that lived down the road from me. We lived in the country in a quiet neighborhood with a sheep farm down the road that had winding stream that ran behind their property and my neighbor's house as well. Needless to say, I learned to play with "boy toys" such as his farm toys, cars ,etc, and played Cowboys and Indians (that should give you a hint of what era!), and I was always the Indian for some reason!! For some reason, he never wanted to reciprocate in playing "house" or dressing dolls!!

However, we discovered a hobby that we both enjoyed! Fishing!! The creek behind his home was our playground and we spent hours wading, swimming, catching crawdads and fishing together. I never touched those crawdads! They had pinchers and looked scary! Ewww!

Once I got past touching those nasty squirming worms, and baiting my own hook (he wouldn't let me use his lures!), I really had fun fishing. We were about 9 years old and got along pretty good for a boy and a girl. He had his own fishing pole and neat looking lures, and I had none! There was an old fishing pole that his Dad had that I was barely allowed to use and when that fishing pole broke--I had nothing to fish with!!

My friend didn't feel sorry enough for me to let me use his fishing pole, so he and I started poking around in his Dad's work shop and found a long stick and some string which we tied to the end of the stick. Then for a hook, we used a nail and hammered it into a shape that we thought made a good hook. There it was...my homemade fishing rod!

I actually got a worm onto that nail and cast my line out into the creek at the deepest point I could find. Believe it or not...I actually caught a fish on that homemade fishing pole! Our parents were amazed! It wasn't a keeper; in fact it wasn't much beyond the minnow stage, but hey... I caught a fish!! That's what it was all about for us! We have went our separate ways in life and I often wonder if he remembers the home-made fishing pole we made that hot summer afternoon all those years ago.

Essential Fishing Tackle For The Beginner

If you're a beginner in the world of fishing then a quick rundown of the most common types of fishing tackle is an excellent place to begin your education. Finally we come to floats and sinkers. Your fishing tackle is not complete without floats and sinkers which take on a special significance. Experienced fishermen know that different types of fish are best caught at specific depths. The wide variety of floats and sinkers will place your bait at the specific depth most commonly associated with the type of fish you're trying to catch.

So now you know the most basic elements of fishing tackle. Of course we have only scratched the surface but you do now have the basics of fishing tackle jargon. Let these basics of fishing tackle be your first step on your journey into the wonderful world of fishing.

As you progress you will find more advanced fishing tackle and equipment available on the market.

The bluegill is a popular game fish with many fishermen. This particular fish is known by a variety of different names such as bream, sunfish or brim. They are found throughout the continental United States in various lakes, streams and ponds.

Bluegills prefer to stay within calm pools within their residential bodies of water. This provides a sheltered area for them and protection from predators. Bluegills are a type of fish that are quite easy to catch and tend to be easily caught along shorelines of ponds, streams and smaller lakes. This is a great type of catch for young individuals as well since they do not have to do too much in order to get a bluegill on the end of their fishing line.

I've been fishing for over 50 years and even more frequently in the last 10 years; during this time I have learned a lot of countless things about fishing in general. The most important is that you can never know it all. Even a novice can show an old timer a trick or two.

Now for the fishing equipment, the rod and reel. Sounds simple enough, but maybe not. As in most other sports, cheap or poor equipment will result in poor results. As an example I met a fellow from southern Ontario (Toronto) while fishing here at home for Northern pike and asked him how the fishing was. His remark was that he was going to rent a boat and give it a try. So I asked him if he would like to go out with me that evening and he accepted. I met him at the dock and told him to load his gear in the boat and offered him a life jacket and away we went. I did not notice what he had loaded at first except he had a nice big new tackle box, as we moved away I asked where is your rod and reel. He went on to open his new tackle box and proceeded to pull out one of those pocket fisherman rigs. Of course I had a hard time from not laughing out loud, but went on to offer him one of my other rigs already in the boat.

Once we hit the area I intended to troll he went on to politely say he wanted to use his own rod but asked what one of his lures he should use for northern pike. He had one large red and white spoon and I told him to use that and made sure he let out enough line for what we were doing. I believe I was praying for him to get the first strike and sure enough he did after about 15 minutes or so and the fun began.

Now this pike he had on was I guessed about 15 pounds, not that big but the struggle with that little, short toy he had was hilarious to watch. I did not believe he would get the fish to the boat but he did although to fast, I had the net and told him to slow down, he did not hear me as I leaned over to net the fish he had it reeled up to about 2 feet from the tip of that little rod, all that pike did was lean on the line and he was gone.

I must add here that he also had no leader on that rig. After that he was so excited and of course wanted to keep fishing, but asked if he could use one of my other rods which was fine because I wanted to see him really hook and land a nice fish. To shorten this story he did land 2 more northerns and a small walleye. Oh yes I did catch a fish, one walleye and one pike, but we had a new fishing addict here. The next day he went into town to the Canadian Tire store and got properly equipped.

I imagine that young man from southern Ontario had some great tall tales to tell when he got home. I wonder how big that one that got away is Now!

A light action graphite spinning rod and reel will handle most fish you will want to catch, plus it is light enough for the beginner to feel even the light hit of those walleye.

So just get out there relax, take your time. Bring some coffee or lunch or even better catch your lunch and cook on one of the many small islands all over these northern lakes. Mostly just enjoy it all the fresh air, wildlife and scenery. Enjoy it all while your watching that loon, deer or even a moose feeding, a big walleye might just swim up and inhale your bait sending that twitch up your line through your rod to your fingers. Set the hook and there's lunch!

Well that's enough from me time for supper and a 5 minute stroll down to the river and make a few casts and see what happens.

Focus on Fishing in Spectacular Scenery

"It's stunning, the majesty of the Canadian Rockies," says Dan Bell, owner of Upper Bow Fly Fishing in Banff, which is in Banff National Park. "It's a pleasant distraction to focus on the fishing when you have so much spectacular scenery."

But a tug on the line will refocus even the most awestruck.

While catch-and-release has been the rule in Alberta's rivers and streams in recent years, the measure has dramatically increased the size of available fish.

The average size is 30 centimetres, but fish now get as big as 45 cms, though that's not as common, says Kim Straker, owner of Calgary-based Clearwater Adventures.

"The bull trout get pretty big and very aggressive," he says, adding that the solitude in the Rockies and the quality of fishing is what makes it so great.

"I've fished quite a bit in Montana and there's more pressure there," he says. "Here, you don't deal with the crowds. The fishing in many instances is just as good and the scenery is at least as beautiful, if not more so."

The streams and rivers in Alberta's Rockies are teeming with Westslope cutthroat, bull, rainbow, brown and brook trout as well as whitefish. Dolly Varden and splake can also be found in select lakes and rivers. The species vary on location but local guides will ensure each angler gets what he or she came for.

At the northern end of the Rockies, Barry Wood takes his clients fishing on Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park. Wood is owner and guide of Maligne Tours Limited. He takes his clients out on the lake when there's too much sediment in the rivers during the spring runoff.

No Crowds, Only Fish

"The fishing's unbelievable," he says. "There's no people and no crowds. My clients enjoy the beauty and serenity of the mountains. I get people who want to catch fish and others who don't even care."

Given the strong attraction of the environment, it seems like icing on the cake that the fishing is so good. Wood says that in five hours of fishing, he can catch as many as 40 fish.

"If you go fishing in Montana, it's wall-to-wall fishermen," he says.
"Here, you've got more diversity and the peaks are a lot more spectacular."

Straker knows what he's talking about. For instance, the highway between Jasper and Banff is off-limits to commercial traffic and the highway is maintained just for tourism. It is one of the most spectacular drives on the planet and it's a region to which Dan Bell also takes his clients.

In these rivers the fly-fishing is great, says Bell, whether it be streamer, nymphing or dry flying. He adds that while the Upper Bow is arguably the most beautiful stream in the world, other streams, like the Ram River, are quite isolated and beautiful and there are lots of big cutthroat and wild animals.

Between Jasper and Banff National Park are countless streams and rivers, all isolated and protected within national park boundaries. There are also great rainbow, cutthroat and bull trout in Kananaskis Country (which is less than an hour's drive from Calgary), and southeast of Banff National Park.

Alberta's Rockies run in one continuous spine from Jasper down to the Crowsnest Pass, near the U.S. border. Throughout the entire range, rivers and streams are plentiful and population sparse. The whole region is home to deer, waterfowl, ospreys, eagles, bears, moose, elk and a variety of other wildlife of all shapes and sizes.

Heading south, the Rockies look different than Jasper, but they remain just as wild and spectacular. Crowsnest Pass, located in the southernmost Rockies, is situated in a windy valley just before the mountain range crosses the border into the United States. It's home to the Crowsnest, Old Man, Livingstone and Castle Rivers.

Women Only Packages

While guides and guiding companies will help anglers find the solitude, scenery and fish they're looking for in the area's rivers and lakes, only the Angler's Ridge Bed & Breakfast offers women-only packages.

Wendy Meerveld, owner and operator of Angler's Ridge, along with a little help from partner companies Saddle Mountain Ridge and Tread Softly, teaches her female clients to fly-fish. At day's end, there's yoga, meditation and Reiki, a spiritual-healing exercise. There's also emphasis on healthy eating and wellness living.

"In three days the women reach total relaxation," says Meerveld. "We take someone from the city who's all hyped up and stressed and they go back utterly relaxed and wishing they could stay."

Though Meerveld and her two business partners have only offered the program for one year, she says there's been lots of positive feedback.

"Women think fishing is a man's sport, but they're catching on," she says. "When you're fly fishing, you have the river coming at you and its very tranquil."

But Angler's Ridge B&B isn't just for women. As the name would suggest, it's one of the few accommodations that caters specifically to anglers.

"I cater to the fly-fishermen," says Meerveld. "I pack them a lunch and if they want to rise at 5 a.m. then I make them breakfast at 5 a.m. We also give them tips because my husband and I are fly-fishermen. We know the areas really well, we tie flies and we can give them tips."

Worm Fishing

There is probably no more popular fishing bait on the planet earth than the good old worm. Just for the record, I'm not speaking of the colorful plastic things that Bass fishermen use. No, I'm speaking of the real thing, a live worm and the best way to fish it. Some anglers believe it's as easy as buying a Styrofoam container of worms, tying on a size 4 hook, and threading a worm onto that hook. Of course worm fishing can be done this way (if you're 10 years old), but an angler can get a bit more technical and learn how to present their worm naturally by employing a set of gang hooks.

Worm fishing becomes as much of an art as fly fishing when a set of gang hooks and ultra light gear are used. So what is a set of gang hooks? A set of gang hooks is simply two small hooks tied in tandem. You see, two small hooks tied in tandem allow the angler to present the worm in a completely natural way. The live worm that you're fishing with ends up looking the same as if you just took a live worm and through it in the water. A set of gang hooks is the only way to go worm fishing, in my opinion.

So how do you get your hand on some of these gang hooks? You can buy them from somewhere like JRWfishing, or with a little research you can tie them yourself. If you what to tie them yourself, simply do a little knot research and you'll be on your way. I personally like to use small hooks (size 10), but size 8 seem to work well for worm fishing as well. If the hooks are too big, the natural presentation is lost while worm fishing.

The bottom line is that if you like worm fishing, and catching more fish, gang hooks need to become a part of your fishing repertoire. My fishing mentor taught me how to use gang hooks while worm fishing, and I've been catching fish ever since. As I alluded to earlier, by using gang hooks and ultra light fishing gear, worm fishing becomes every bit of the art that fly fishing claims to be. Remember: You don't have to be waving a fake flea back and forth to be considered an artist.

Fly Fishing, The Top 10 Myths

The old myths are shattered. You'll be introduced to fly fishing in an entirely different way. Fly fishing is no longer considered difficult to learn or expensive to participate in. You'll soon come to realize that this sport is easy to learn, and will reward your efforts with many fantastic days on the water!

Learning to fly fish is an excellent way to utilize all of the natural resources that are available to everyone -- world-wide. Oceans, streams, lakes, bays and estuary's literally teem with game fish, and are easily accessible . By learning to fly fish, you will enjoy the natural world around you, get some easy exercise, relieve the strain of everyday life, and even better, there are no greens fees or country club dues - no membership tab, and no lines to wait on!

Here's the list of myths:

1. Fly Fishing is difficult

Fly casting will take a few practice sessions to become proficient enough to hit the water -- but that's all you'll need to get started. Why not take a look at some online fly fishing lessons (see the resources section at the end of this article) -- then practice in a park, your backyard or another private place. Hit a lake or pond, where you won't find many obstructions behind you to get in the way. Catch a few pan-fish, learn to land fish - now you're ready for the stream, ocean or wherever you'd like to fly fish!

2. Fly Fishing is expensive

It simply is not. Fly fishing can be expensive if you spend a lot of your hard earned mullah on premier, top of the line (dare say - overpriced?) fly gear. Don't go bottom of the line either - inexpensive equipment is hard to use because inexpensive materials are heavier and not as stiff as quality graphite. Very inexpensive gear simply does not hold up to rugged fishing use - and we are rugged, aren't we?

So -- look around. There are some great deals on beginner fly fishing outfits -- don't let the word "beginner" scare you away. This gear is not only fairly priced, but the rods are specifically designed to be easier to cast and will last a long time if you take care of them. Take this from a fly fisher that broke his very first (and precious!) fly rod in the hatchback of a Toyota Celica! Some fly rod outfits even come complete with a protective rod & reel traveling case!

3. You can only Fly Fish for Trout

You get the picture. Trout stream, pipe in mouth, tweed jacket, leather patches, wicker creel...

Wrong. Today's fly fishing is so much more exciting than that (but if the above excites you - by all means - knock yourself out!).

I took up fly fishing in my early twenties as the result of a childhood memory of my father and other fly fishers on the famous Beaverkill in Roscoe, NY. Let's just suffice to say that there was a lot of tweed and wicker in the '60's. Today the world has changed! Now -- picture this forty-something year old with his wife on the flats in the Florida Keys hunting down barracuda, bonefish and permit. All tropical, all cool, all hot, we were fishing machines -- it was everything you'd ask for in the excitement department!

Species: so many - let's see, OK - trout, bass (large-mouth and small-mouth), carp, pike, pickerel, perch, sunnies, crappies, steelhead, salmon (many varieties - and Lox is not a variety of salmon!), then there's striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, bonito, weakfish, bonefish, barracuda, permit, mangrove snapper, snook, Spanish mackerel , jack crevalle. Oh the list goes on! But I'll stop.

4. Fly Fishing has to be done in Exotic Locations

Although the Florida Keys are very nice, as well as New Zealand, Christmas Island, Belize and the like...

There are so many places close to home that can and will provide you with the total fly fishing experience. Your local park probably may have a stocked pond. That pretty little stream with the bridge that you cross every day -- may be a trout stream. The beach that you take the dog to for a run -- there are fish to catch there! Fly fishing is a great sport in that it enables you to open your eyes and enjoy the world around you.

Then again, a vacation sounds nice too!

Places: rivers, streams, creeks, brooks, tributaries, lakes, ponds, farm ponds, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, bays, estuaries, jetties, flats, reefs...

5. You need a PhD in Biology to Succeed

You won't need a PhD in any subject to succeed in fly fishing! You might think so after conversing with some fly fishers. The reality is that you can over-complicate this sport as much as you'd like. Yes, here are times that fish are selective (won't take the fly you're fishing) --- but in most cases you can dupe them with a selection of about two or three flies properly fished.

6. You have to be an Olympic Athlete to Fly Fish

Just as in any other sport, you can participate to the level of your physical abilities and derive complete enjoyment! Groups continue to build handicap access sites on streams and lakes -- all over the US (and worldwide), and you can find a location to fly fish right outside your car!

7. You can't learn to Fly Fish on your own

Many have, and many will. Guides, fly shops, fly fishing schools and the like will try to convince you that you'll need those expensive lessons to get started. We disagree. And here are the key words -- "to get started". There are so many great resources for the beginner fly fisher -- just read a little, online or off, and get out on the water and fly fish!

8. I thought you had to attach a real live fly to the end of the line

Negative. Fly Fishing is all about imitating fish food with a hand-made "fly", often constructed of fur and feathers, but can also be constructed from man-made materials. The key here is imitating the natural food of the species of fish your are fly fishing for. For instance, saltwater species often feed on small minnows -- and saltwater "flies" often imitate small fish or minnows.

9. I can't do it, I tried once

Here's the thing about fly casting: You are not casting any weight at the end of the line as with a spin rod. You are casting the fly line itself. Here's a simple analogy: pretend that you are holding a stick with an apple pushed onto the top. You want to toss the apple across the room to your friend. You would have to swing the stick and abruptly stop the swing to let the apple fly off the top of the stick and hurl across the room to your waiting friend. Just imagine now that the stick is your fly rod, and the apple is actually your fly line. Fly casting is much the same as the analogy: your forward cast will start, just as when you swung the stick, and then stop abruptly to allow the fly line to hurl forward. 10. You have to cast really far to catch fish

Most fish are you'll be targeting are within 30 ft -- or, you can get to within 30 ft of them. To cast to a fish this far away, you only have to be able to cast 21 - 23 ft of fly line, taking into consideration that most leaders (your terminal tackle) are 7.5 to 9 ft. We know, for certain, that with one or two practice sessions -- you'll be casting at least that far!

Fishing Tips Tricks Advice And Techniques

How many times have you heard the phrase, "Man - you should have been here yesterday, the fish were just jumping into the boat!"

You may think that it would be useless to try for the same fish that everybody else was pounding yesterday. However, that isn't always the case. Often times, when fish are "hit hard" on a certain technique or in a certain spot, they get smart and move somewhere else and stop falling for the old standby lures. But, it DOESN'T mean they have stopped biting completely. Start where the guy's were catching them yesterday, except instead of using the same lure, opt for something radically different, but that is still proven to catch 'em. Then work your way into non-traditional holes, because the fish may have moved away from the "zone" as a result of being over pressured. You just might teach your buddies that good fishing doesn't have to be for just one day!

Here are a few techniques that you can use to catch even the most highly pressured fish.

Lighten up! Use lighter line and smaller lures with a natural presentation.

Move your bait SLOWLY! Some neutral to negative feeding fish will hit a slow moving lure and absolutely ignore on that's moving just a little too fast. If you have a high gear ratio reel, turn the handle extra slow. A good way to get an idea of how fast your lure is actually running is to cast parallel to where your fishing and reel at a normal pace. If your trolling, just run the lure beside the boat at normal speed. (This is also a good way to make sure your lure is in tune.) Sometimes live bait is the only way to get a fish to strike, especially in ultra clear water. I don't make a habit of using live bait all the time though, because it is important to be VESATILE!

Last but not least -- be silent. A sudden sound can automatically give a fish "lock jaw" that would normally be happy to eat your bait. Well maybe not happy, happy ;o) You might be asking yourself, " If these slow techniques will catch fish even in tough conditions, why not use them all the time?" Well, because your wasting time! When fish are in positive mood, fish fast. When they're negative mood, fish slow. It's that simple!

Going Fishing For Fish Oils

Have you heard? Fish oil supplements are being recommended for everyone! Believe a lot of the hype, with my usual caveats!

Fish oil and whole, un-processed oils in general are just what the doctor ordered. Especially coming out of our 30 year ?fat fast? where Americans avoided as much fat as possible, it is good to hear that we can add some good, healthy fats into our diet. There?s been increasing media attention being paid to the use of omega-3 fish oils (The Today Show, January 31, 2007), and even primary care providers are recommending them for their patients.

Fish oils have been proven to lower our risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Why is fish oil important?

As with a variety of fats, our body requires a significant amount to survive. In many of my articles and in my book, I discuss the ?exchange of life?; the process by which water, oxygen and nutrients are brought into each of our 100 trillion cells and how carbon dioxide, wastes and toxins are moved out of the cells. This process must flow freely in order for our cells and our bodies to be healthy.

The cell membrane, made up of mostly fats, is at the center of this exchange process. These membranes are like its skin: a protective barrier that is selective about what it lets in and out; the softer and more supple it is, the more functional and more beautiful we are, inside and out!

Stress, toxicity, poor diet, poor rest/sleep and poor water intake can all cause the cell membranes in our bodies to be come rigid and prematurely aged. The more rigid and unhealthy our cell membranes, the more likely we are to suffer from symptoms like lethargy, aches/stiffness, headaches and more. Left uncorrected, symptoms can lead to more serious concerns of chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, chronic pain and even chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Don?t fret!

By improving our lifestyle and getting the proper amount of healthy fats into our diet, we can create soft, supple, healthy cell membranes. This is the path to truly regaining and maintaining our health.

All sounds pretty good so far, right? Well, actually it is. So what are my caveats?

1. While I most often recommend patients get the nutrients they need directly from their source (in this case by eating fish), I actually do not recommend patients eat fish 2-3 times per week. Because of the reports of fish contamination, especially with mercury, it is not a good idea to eat fish too often. A couple of servings per month is plenty.

2. Don?t just use fish oils. Current medical research indicates the VARIETY of fats in the diet is as important as what types and how much. There are many healthy, delicious oils out there for you. There?s the classic olive and sunflower oils, but what about the nut oils? Almond, walnut, sesame and peanut (actually a legume) oil are all excellent choices. These oils will improve the health and flexibility of your cells? membranes all while highly satisfying your taste buds!

You can and should use a small to moderate amount of more saturated (thicker) oils like butter (organic when possible) and coconut oil. Again, the body needs a variety of fats. Too many of the same kind of fat can lead to imbalanced cellular membranes and can also degrade our health. Healthy oils are always sold in glass bottles or in the large metal cans, like olive oil. Oils sold in plastic are a no-no, as the packaging indicates that the oils are over-processed and not very healthy for you.

3. Avoid processed, trans or hydrogenated fats. These fats have been processed and altered in ways that make them unhealthy to the body. This includes margarine, processed butter substitutes, cheap vegetable oils (in plastic containers) and foods fried in hydrogenated oils (chips, snacks, restaurant fried foods).

4. Cook with fats and oils as little as possible. Heating fats can damage (denature) them, making them less or un-usable in the body. I suggest cooking with just enough to keep food from sticking to the pot/pan and then adding the oil to the food on your plate like a condiment. This is not a new concept, as it is done in many countries throughout the world.

So how much oil do I need in a day, doc?

Well, that is different for everyone. As part of my Bio-Logikal Diet, I am able to calculate how much fat a person needs in a day and we build it into their meal plan. Most people need 2-3 servings (teaspoons) of fresh, pure oil daily.

Choose your oil supplements with care. The toxicity that may be present in fish may spill over into supplements if the manufacturer isn?t taking the utmost care to purify them out, and without damaging the oil. Only use a fish oil product from a manufacturer that provides specific information on their purity specifications.

Fish oil can also present a problem with flavor. Manufacturers are using different natural flavorings to conceal the taste of fish that might ?repeat? or be ?burped?. Flavorings must be strong to conceal the fish flavor (lemon, orange, strawberry) and often patients burp up the flavor taste instead. Therefore, I strongly recommend using an ?enteric coated? fish oil product. This natural (extra) coating process allows the softgel to move through the stomach and into the small intestine where it opens and is absorbed. This minimizes or eliminates the ?repeating? and makes taking this kind of supplement much more rewarding. The enteric coating process is a bit expensive, so you will see EC products are a bit higher in cost, but worth it in my opinion.

I recommend Terra-EPA, a highly purified, enteric coated fish oil (600 EPA/400 DHA). I am also increasingly recommending our Terra-EFA which contains a combination of fish, flax and borage oils all blended together in a softgel capsule.

Basic Fishing Equipment - Beginner's Guide

Be it a warm summer morning or a cold wintry afternoon, you can never fail to see a fishing line or two while passing a lake or a stream. Fishing is a habit close to addiction for those who have the flair and skill for it. Ask any seasoned angler what it takes to land up with a good catch and he?ll promptly tell you that it is sheer instinct and logic mixed with basic common sense. With a lot of practice and experience, you get to know which rod and reel is best suited with which line and in what kind of rig. Matching all the fishing tools properly goes a long way in making a fishing experience both enjoyable and productive.

Now let us go through the checklist of fishing equipment for the benefit of beginners. The list includes the following basic tools:

Fishing rod
Hook
Line
Reel
Float/bobber
Sinker
Lure

Before getting into the nitty-gritty of the best combination of the above-mentioned equipment for good fishing experience, let us discuss briefly the different varieties of each tool available in the market.

Fishing rod:

In modern times, a fishing rod is manufactured to allow the angler to feel the bite of fish. The rod shaft is termed as blank. The blank is usually made of graphite, fiberglass, or other material depending upon its actions. The action of these blanks can be light, medium, medium-heavy, and heavy. The actions of the tip of the blank are called regular, light, and extra light. When the guides and handles have been assembled onto the blank, we get a complete fishing rod. Depending on the type of fish you are out to catch, you can choose a rod based on its blank. Most of the new graphite rods are light in weight and are balanced at the reel seat (i.e., when you set the rod handle on your finger with the reel attached, the rod should balance equally from tip to the end of the handle). The guides (or eyes) fitted on the rod help in transmitting signals to the rod so that the angler can feel the fish biting on the bait. The guides should be clean and in prim condition to allow optimum performance of the rod.

When choosing handle length, think of your comfort level. If you are on high ground, then a 7-foot rod can be a good choice so that you can cast farther. However, if the ground is low, then a shorter rod will make it easier for you to flip, cast and spoon fish.

For bass fishing, light action rods are a definite no-no as it takes some effort to pull a bass out whereas for small bait-fish, you need an extra fast action blank tip to prevent the fish from making desperate movements. Hence it is clear that you must choose your rod based on your catch.

Hook:

Hooks are needed to allow the angler to use the bait and help the bait to stay on longer, thus increasing potential chance of a catch. Hooks can be chosen according to the size of the fish from juvenile to adulthood. Hooks come in a wide variety of colours, metal treatments and finishes. Some are better suited for salt-water applications while others perform well in freshwater. There are certain hooks that are invisible under certain light conditions whilst differences in water colour and distinct clarity may be the requirement for other types of hooks.

The most popular and widely used varieties of hooks are:

Octopus hook ? Most common, it is an octopus-like strong tapered shank hook with a turned up tapered eye, wide open mouth and moderate depth throat. The curved-in point in this pattern is extremely sharp and penetrates readily. Mostly used for snappers.

Long shank hook ? This has a kerbed parabolic bend, shallow bite, either a short curved-in point or a modified hollow point. This is used in case of fast-biting fish and ideal for kids to handle.

Circle hook pattern ? This one commonly has an extra strong forged shaft with a wide circular or squared-off bend narrowing to an exaggerated re-entrant point. This has a deep penetration point. This is very popular amongst game fishers.

Ganging hook ? This usually has the turned down, open eye Kendall Kirby pattern with a medium length flexibly formed wire shaft, in sizes ranging from 1/0 to 6/0. The open eye is intended to be used to combine two or three ganging hooks to form a ganged set depending on the size of bait. The ganging hook is ideal for whole baits like garfish and when the bait is being smashed against rocky terrain.

Southern and tuna hook ? This is heavily forged with the rod tapering to a brazed ring and the circular bend with its knife edge point drawn inwards toward the rod. This type of hook, once lodged into the mouth of a fish is difficult to dislodge. This is popular with game fishers.

Line:

From the anciently used piece of cotton string, fishing lines have evolved to a much fancier version in the present day. Braided lines are still sometimes used in saltwater for big fish, but most anglers use monofilament lines called the new super lines. Monofilament comes in basically two types ? a flexible, or limp, line that has some stretch, but seldom recoils or snaps when cast and left on the reel for a long time. The other is more abrasion resistant, less stretch and usually retains some memory and tends to hold a coil when it's been on the reel for a while, thus increasing the chance of a backlash.

Braided line has a smaller diameter compared to monofilament for the same line size and is generally not taut. It is used for flipping (placing the bait quietly in a given spot using an underhand cast, without disturbing the water, while holding the rod with the other hand)and pitching (putting worms or jigs into cover at close distances using underhand pendulum motion) where high strength and good abrasion resistance is needed.

In case of bream fishing, a light-weight line of 4-8 pounds will suffice whereas with bass fishing, 6-12 pounds (or even 12-24 pounds) is required. Tying a good knot in the line to hold the hook is essential. The basic knots used by anglers are: Clinch, Palomar (simple knot for terminal tackle), Uni (also known as the Hangman?s knot) and Loop (can be easily tied at night with minimum effort).

Reel:

Reels have come a long way from the old direct drive, sleeve-bearing to the sophisticated ones found in modern times. They come in four basic types, the simplest of them being the closed-face spinning reel, which is operated by a push button and helps protect against getting tangled when you cast the rod. Next comes the open-face spinning reel which helps in casting the line a little further. The size of the reel depends upon the weight of fishing line. Another reel type is the bait-casting reel. These reels have some kind of a braking system, (either magnetic or centrifugal) to help slow the spool and control backlash problems. The more the number of ball or needle bearings in the reel, the more costly it turns out to be. The fourth type of reel is the fly-fishing reel. A fly reel is not cast, and is mainly a place to store the line and keep it free from tangles. Line is pulled from the reel, and the rod is waved overhead to work the line out.

Float/bobber:

Floats are used by anglers for two distinct purposes ? to insert the bait at the surface or a specific depth under the water level, and as a bait indicator showing whether the fish is at the bait or not, allowing the angler to know when to strike and set the hook. They can be used for both fresh-water as well as salt-water experiences. Floats come in a wide shapes and sizes with different levels of buoyancy.

Some commonly used varieties of floats include: bobby cork and casting float (used for casting large baits over greater distance. Provide minimum wind resistance and sits on water with stability. Used by land-based anglers and sport anglers); bubble float (clear plastic float used for freshwater fishing in clear, least turbulent water); pencil float (a centre spindle pierced through the center of a cork, this can be used as a fixed float at a predetermined depth or as a running float at an adjustable depth. Provides minimum resistance to the fish when biting at the bait, so angler can time the strike to set the hook); quill float (it is very long, narrow and incredibly light consisting of attachment clips and snaps. Being light, fish feels no resistance from surface while taking the bait and the angler can take time to strike to set the hook); cork and homemade float (cork being inexpensive, tough and featuring the flexibility to be cut into various shapes and sizes makes it ideal for using it to make homemade floats).

Sinker:

The primary utility of a sinker is to present and hold the bait or lure at a particular depth beneath the surface of water. The various types of sinkers are: ball, barrel, bean, split shot, snapper lead, tear drop, star, and spoon (used for ease of retrieve of fish).

The ball, barrel, and bean sinkers are mainly designed to allow a degree of movement. These types of sinkers can be used in all kinds of water, still or turbulent. Whether at the bottom of the water surface or at mid-water, a fish can move off with them without feeling the weight of the line.

Split shot sinkers are similar to ball sinkers, but mostly used in calm or least turbulent water. These sinkers can be used with different weighing configurations. Split shots can be used for catching small finicky fish feeding at particular depths with a lot of ease.

Snapper leads and tear drop sinkers are mainly used for deep-sea fishing with heavier lines. These provide the advantage of holding the bait vertically even in strong currents. They are also used as surf casting sinkers.

Star sinkers are primarily used for surf, beaches and estuary usage supporting moderate to heavy lines. These sinkers provide great horizontal stability to the baits due to their star- pyramid shape and heavy bodies. These can be used in strong currents.

Lure/flies:

Lures are colourful, artificial plastics or metal shapes used to attract the attention of the fish by simulating the look and movement of their natural prey, to fool them into believing these can be eaten, or even to challenge their territorial instincts. Lures are available in various shapes, sizes and colours catering to the various needs of an angler. The common lures are ? minnow types (look like small fish with metal or plastic bib, Ideal for nearly all casting and trolling purposes), soft and scented plastics, metal lures and slices (heavy replicas of bait-fish, ideal for fishing off beaches and rocks), surface poppers (cigar-shaped, suitable for surf, trolling and estuary usage), skirted trolling lures (designed to be tough and used for salt water game-fishing), jigs (heavy-weight fast sinking lure meant for lifting and dropping the lure repeatedly by hand or by rod and wind action from the side of a boat or jetty. They are useful for catching tuna, mackerel and kingfish), squid jigs (squids used as baits for catching snapper or gummy sharks), celtas and insect spinners (for fresh-water fish like trout and red fin).

Flies are used for replicating natural behaviour of aquatic insects on which fish feed in water and with their subtle movement and placement, can be used to trick the fish to rush towards the bait or to challenge their natural territory. Different types of flies and aquatic insects have their habitats at different levels of water. Depending on which fish feeds on what type of insects, flies can be presented as live baits at that level of water column to bait that particular variety of fish. Flies can be categorized into wet fly, dry fly, Matuka and salt water fly collections depending on the surface they can be located at.

Finally for the beginner, the affordable and least complicated combination of fishing equipment would be a Zebco 33 rod and reel package. It comes with a 10-pound line meant for most small and medium sized fish. The other basic tackle that?ll be required are ? size #6 or #8 live bait hooks, a couple of crappie rigs, a few 1/4-ounce and 3/8-ounce bell sinkers, a small cork or float. For a less messy experience, you could stock up the following artificial tackles ? a package of 1/0 offset worm hooks, some 3/16-ounce bullet worm weights and a package of 4-inch watermelon and pumpkinseed Venom worms called Slammers, one or two 1/8-ounce shad pattern spinner baits and a couple of 1/4-ounce chrome/blue back lipless crank baits. For crappie, perch and sand bass, you need a few small white and bright yellowish-green jig hooks with the same color small grubs (short plastic worms). These tools will not be too expensive, but will be enough for the basic tackle to lure a wide variety of species.

Getting the right combination of equipment and choice of bait comes with practice and experience, and as you try your luck with a variety of fish in different weather conditions and seasons, you can soon master this skill. Until then happy fishing!

Quick And Easy Way To Your First Salmon Fishing Adventure

Your First Fishing Rod:

The most important piece of equipment is a fishing rod and the best place to purchase a rod is at a real pro shop or bait and tackle shop. Pro shops usually have a really good return policy. If you get a rod that is not comfortable for you, too stiff or too flexible, too long or too short, they will usually exchange it for a rod that will work better for you. They want your return business for things like bait and tackle.

The Place:

The best place to fish for salmon is in the river when they come up to spawn. The local pro shop should be happy to provide you with the best times for fishing salmon. Salmon spawn at different times and come up the rivers at different intervals throughout the season, so planning is important if you want to fish when the salmon are spawning.

The Boat:

Best to have a flat bottom river boat, but those are expensive. It may not be a good idea to take a regular "V" hull lake boat into the river because the depths can be too shallow and unpredictable.

The Guide?

Another exciting way to experience your first salmon trip is by hiring a guide. You'll learn more from the guide then on your own. It can be pricey, but it's worth it. Something to think about.

Shore Fishing

No boat? No worries. Fishing from shore is a wonderful way to experience this fantastic hobby as well.

The Bait:

Ask the at the pro shop what works best in your area or the area you are going to fish. They usually suggest salmon eggs. They are cured in many different ways and everyone has their favorite. The reason why you would want to use salmon eggs is because after salmon spawn, the parent fish stay around the nest to protect the eggs from predators like trout.

The currents will also carry the eggs away. When this happens the parent fish gently pick the eggs in their mouth and bring them back to the nest. So, when you dangle salmon eggs in the water after the salmon have spawned, they will see the eggs and assume that some have floated out of the nest. When they go to retrieve them, they get hooked!

The Catch:

Take along an ice chest filled with ice to keep your catch fresh. You may want to have a couple of five gallon buckets as well. One bucket for cleaning your catch. Another bucket to keep the ready-to-eat gutted and cleaned salmon in. If you clean it before you take it home, you avoid the smelly bloody mess in your kitchen. A third bucket could be used to save salmon eggs gutted from a female. You can save the egg sack and cure it later. The Filleting:

You can cut your fish in two ways, steaks or fillets. Salmon steaks are the easiest way to cut them up. Filleting takes a little more practice. You will probably destroy the first few you try to fillet. Don't worry, all those little mangled pieces can be smoked and turned into a salmon dip. Mmm good!

The Cooking:

There are many ways to cook salmon. Pan fry, BBQ, roasted or even smoked. If you do decide to smoke your salmon pieces, be sure not to dry them out too much.

Here's a simple recipe for salmon dip.

One cup smoked salmon

Two 8 oz packages of cream cheese

Half cup chopped onion

Salt, pepper, garlic, to taste

Now you have it; go out there and catch some salmon!

All across the United States there are many beautiful, exciting places that are excellent or fly fishing. The following article just highlights a few of them.

Sitka, Alaska is a major stopover for salmon heading to British Columbia, Washington, and other Alaskan waters. Fly fishermen at Sitka, have a higher fishing catch rate than any other marine area in Southeast Alaska. June is the best month for fishing this area.

The Colorado River at Lees Ferry, Arizona, is one of the best fly fishing spots for rainbow trout. The fish are comfortable all year round in a 15-mile stretch of cold water that flows from the depths of Lake Powell between Glen Canyon Dam and the upper end of the Grand Canyon. Fly fishermen can also book a guide and go flats fishing for 25 pound carp.

Saltwater fly fishing is at its best at Montauk Point, New York. Montauk Point is the easternmost point of Long Island and is best known for striper fishing. Fly fishermen have miles of beautiful shoreline in which they can cast their fly.

Gunpowder Falls, Maryland, is an excellent place to catch cold water trout. A deal was struck by the Maryland state authorities and Trout Unlimited to start cold water releases from Pretty Boy Dam. This has resulted in a combination of wild and stocked brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Most of the fly fishing is in Gunpowder Falls State Park.

Fishing Creek, Pennsylvania, is one of the states top wild trout streams. It generally stays cool throughout the summer. There is a five-mile stretch called the Narrows, near Lamar, that is a very popular area for fly fishing.

Driftless Area, Wisconsin, has many excellent fly fishing streams loaded with brown trout. There is excellent access to all of southwestern Wisconsin's eight counties. There are 68 streams in Vernon County alone, including Kickapoo River and Timber Coulee Creek. Most fly fishermen in this area use mayfly and caddis imitations.

Laguna Madre, Texas, is full of rivers and lakes that are excellent fly fishing locations. Texas also has its southern coast, which is among the world's greatest saltwater fly fishing areas. The saltwater flats of Laguna Madre, next to Padre Island, are full of all different kinds of fish that make for a great fly fishing experience.

Henry's Fork, Idaho, is a great destination for rainbow trout. If you are fishing the Island Park area, it is better to fish in runoff conditions.

Lake C. W. McConaughy, Nebraska, is the largest lake in the state and also has some of the best fly fishing. Another excellent fly fishing spot in Nebraska is the Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area, which is a series of twenty sandpit lakes that have been carved into the Platte River basin. Red Willow reservoir is also a favorite of fly fishermen in this area of the country.

When it is finally time for you to go on a real fishing trip, remember to always cast your line a little way ahead of the fish. Also try to make your lure or bait land softly and without much of a splash. The fish will see the bait at a close point, but if the line is behind the fish, the fish will not be able to see it.

Should there be at any one time your cast gets a little disorganized, you should move closer towards the water. This will help you get better accuracy in casting your line.

Keep a close eye on the bobber. If you detect any movement, or if the bobber goes underwater, you will know that a fish has grabbed the bait. This means you've got a fish hooked on your line. Relax and don't get too excited. Stay calm at all times.

Now that the fish is hooked, try to keep your line tight and very slowly reel in your fish. Hold your net close by and use it to get the fish out of the water. Once your fish is out, you can proceed to remove the hook from the fish. This you should very carefully do so you don't end up hurting yourself.

Should you find that the fish you just caught is undersized (in accordance to the states regulation book) you should immediately return it to the water. Also, if you have no intention to cook your catch of the day, do not waste the fish. You should quickly throw it back into the water. When you throw your fish back into the water you are helping to supply the water with more fish. This way, fishermen in the future will be able to experience the same exhilarating feeling that you get when you get a catch.

And finally, do make sure you take your time to look around and enjoy your surrounding environment. You will find that this is the best time for you to experience the calm and peaceful view of the water.

"Here, you've got more diversity and the peaks are a lot more spectacular."

"In three days the women reach total relaxation," says Meerveld. "We take someone from the city who's all hyped up and stressed and they go back utterly relaxed and wishing they could stay."

Though Meerveld and her two business partners have only offered the program for one year, she says there's been lots of positive feedback.

"Women think fishing is a man's sport, but they're catching on," she says. "When you're fly fishing, you have the river coming at you and its very tranquil."

During the summer of 2006 in Larsen Bay Alaska, the staff at Kodiak Island Resort kodiakresort decided to experiment with different tactics for catching halibut. The traditional method using terminal tackle with 16/0 circle hooks, 2-pound sinkers and 130-pound Dacron line that have always produced fish. The down side to this style of fishing is it is tiresome holding heavy rods and reels. Fishing with a fully rigged halibut outfit requires a lot of strength and energy we decided to try and change all of that.

After various experiments we tried a Florida style grouper rig for halibut and were surprised with the results. Fishing thirty pound monofilament, seven foot Star rod, a three ounce egg sinker and 7/0 Mustad J-hook consistently outfished the traditional halibut rig. The results were so overwhelming that often times the light tackle would produce bites and catches of 4 and 5 times the rate of the traditional tackle.

We found using an octopus tentacle, about eight inches long, for bait, proved deadly to the unsuspecting halibut. We caught countless fish using this style, in the 20-40 pound range, with our biggest topping out at 87 pounds.

The one down side from light tackle halibut fishing is your inability to control the numerous "barn door halibut" that like this style of fishing as well. On more than one occasion big halibut chomped down on our offerings and refused to return our gear. In fact they would take the hook, sinker and line (completely dump the reel) without even saying thanks.

If you don't mind missing a few big ones but want to increase you catch while expending a lot less energy try Florida style grouper tactics to catch Alaska Halibut.

The halibut fishing around Kodiak Island is so good you can split your time fishing terminal gear for the barn doors then switching over to catch the 20-40 pound chickens for the dinner table. Kodiak Island Resort will provide you with both opportunities to catch halibut.

Small Stream Fly Fishing

It's early morning, mist is rising and the midges that have been swarming around you are breakfast for the small browns you have cometo catch. You quietly walk up to the stream, watching the swirls ofrising fish. You tie a nymph onto your leader and step into the water.

A trout skids away from under your feet, its flight sending outwarning signals as bright as any neon light. The feeding fish flee in response and you are left with a section of river devoid of all but themidges. Welcome to fly fishing the small stream.

Stop and look before fly fishing the small stream

Before you get into the water stop and look at what is in front of you.This is especially true when approaching the small stream. Trout are wellcamouflaged, especially when you are looking down into the water. (A good pair of Polaroid glasses helps here.)

I like to make my first cast well back from the waters edge. If there is little cover then I tend to use a long leader and lay the line on theriverbank, allowing only the leader to enter the water, as close tothe near bank as possible. That way, if there are any fish lying closeunder the bank, I will have given them first look at my fly.

Reading the water of the small stream

The waters of the small stream are like those of any river, juston a smaller scale. The fish will be in the same types of water thatthey would be in if you were fishing any trout stream. When you arefly fishing the small stream, look for those areas that provide thefish with their need for protection from predators, relief from fastflowing currents, and access to food.

Fishing the pocket water

I like to use dry flies when fly fishing pocket water in a smallstream. The fish will usually be holding out of the main current butclose enough to grab any food that comes floating by, and a driftingfly is often too tempting to resist.

Often it is not necessary to match the fly closely to whatever is hatching. Instead I like to fish a fly that is visible enough for meto see in fast moving water. Something like a light elk hair caddis works well. When the strike comes I can see it and I catch more fishthis way than missing the strike by using a less visible, hatch matchingfly.

Fly fishing the small stream usually requires a more sensitiveapproach and a finesse that is not necessary in larger rivers. Experience and practice are the great tellers here. Ability to read the water is more critical as the fish are often more easily spooked than their big water cousins. But when you make your way home at theend of a successful fishing day in the back country you know that the time spent learning to fly fish the small stream has been worthwhile.

Fishing for rainbow trout is the only fishing available on the lake. Roche was cleared of coarse fish a number of years ago (30+) and is stocked only with rainbow trout. This lake is not a designated fly fishing only lake so you can expect to share the water with trollers and spincasters. There are a few restrictions for fishing on the lake and I would suggest that you consult your British Columbia Freshwater Fishing Regulations before venturing onto the water. The lake is located approximately 16 kms from the main turn off of Hwy 5A, 35 kms south of Kamloops. Access is along a maintained but busy gravel road where even your car will suffice. The main road leads through the main Roche Lake Provincial Park onto the Roche Lake Resort where it ends.

Roche Lake West, the other provincial campground is accessed via the Horseshoe Lake turnoff, just before you reach Rose and Tulip Lake. This road is very bumpy but an holes have a hard bottom. Stay left on this road when you come upon the Horseshoe Lake turnoff (almost immediately when you make you initial right turn off the Roche Lake Rd)and follow it to the end. This is my favorite put-in at the lake as it gives easy access to 5 Pound Bay, the south end islands and the south-east island area. This south end has wonderful shoals that are particularly productive in the fall especially dragging a chironomid or dragon through the marl, stirring up bottom to attract feeding trout.

Roche Lake is the largest lake in a group of 10 trout lakes in the area. With an area of 134ha, it sits at an approximate elevation of 1135m (3723ft). It is best navigated in a small boat and motor but a pontoon or belly boat will get you into some prime areas especially if you access from Roche Lake West. Check out this area map (and print it if you like) to give you an understanding of the area.

Approximate Size and Elevation:

Roche is the largest lake in the group at 134ha and sits at an approximate elevation of 1135m (3723ft). It is best navigated in a small boat and motor but a pontoon or belly boat will get you into some prime areas especially if you access from Roche Lake West.Recommended Flies and Lines:

Roche has prolific chironimid and mayfly hatches early in the season (after May 1st - opening day) which are best fished on floating lines with or without a strike indicator. I make sure that my chironimids are weighted so that they can get me to the desired depth as soon as possible. Also try a bloodworm, micro-leech or damsel nymph fished the same way. I prefer not using a strike indicator with the micro-leech or damsel nymph. Wet line fishermen do well with a big black/brown/green leech or a dragon fly nymph fished parallel to the weedbeds or shoal dropoffs. Try casting or trolling and vary the retrieve or speed of your boat.

Early June to mid-July can bring on moderate sedge hatches that the rainbows will take eagarly in the mornings and evenings.

The heat of the summer can slow fishing down. Go deep except late in the evening (even when it's dark) when you can stalk large rainbows that come in to the marl shallows to feed for migrating dragons,damsels and caddis nymph. A small (#12) weighted black spratley fished along the shoal on a dry line can be deadly.

The fall can bring a mass of activity where many flies and lines can be used. The Roche Lake Area lakes usually host a tremendous 'waterboatman' flight anywhere from late August to early October where the fish feed in a frenzy. Chironimids (all sizes but mostly tiny - #14-#18), dragons, leeches and snail patterns can be productive.

Special Notes:

Roche gets very busy so I tend to visit the other lakes in the area. Most of my fishing on this lake has been on the southern half of the lake accessed via Roche Lake West. The bay where you launch seems to produce well with a leech. If you continue south to the next bay on your right (west) you will find what I call '5lb Bay'. It has marl shoals, bullrush, sub-surface weedbeds and a consistent bottom depth of about 12'-16'.

Diagonally across from the Roche Lake West campground is the island(s) where big fish can be found year round. There are some restrictions in this area and we recommend that you check your provincial fishing regulations.

The far south end of the lake tapers into a marl shoal and seems particularly productive in the fall using a gomphus dragon that you can drag along the bottom.

There are similar areas in the north half of the lake where you can try all the same strategies.

Fishing Tips for the New Angler - Where to Find the Big Bass!

Ready to join the growing number of sportsmen who have set their sights on catching that big bass? Thousands of new anglers are gearing up to hit the lakes, streams and rivers in search of the largemouth bass. This magnificent game fish can be as elusive as that winning lottery ticket.

Bass are part of the sunfish family. Other members of this species include spotted bass, smallmouth bass, rock bass, bluegill, and pumpkinseed fish. These bass, including the largemouth, are identified as warm water bass or black bass. Because of its "spirited" nature on the line, the largemouth bass is a favorite game fish for the casual weekend angler, as well as, the tournament fisherman.

As a new angler, your greatest challenge will be locating the "hideouts" of the largemouth bass. What makes the bass such a great game fish is that they are hard to predict. They are sensitive to environmental and seasonal changes. As water temperatures or levels change, so will their resting places. Other factors affecting their location might be season, weather conditions, amount of daylight, and food availability.

So, where is the best place to find the big "Kahuna" of bass? Different bodies of water will yield different results. Let's take a look at each:

Ponds

Ponds can yield satisfactory results, but the bass tend to be small to medium in size. Weeds and reeds are the natural habitat of bass. When fishing ponds, look for areas of weed beds near the shore. Bass will tend to congregate near or in these weedy areas, but also like to hide around sunken logs, large rocks, or deep holes.

Lakes

Natural lakes must be divided into two categories - lakes in the Southern states and lakes in the Northern states. The lakes in the north tend to have a wide array of topography - rock bluffs, weed beds, holes, sunken logs, reefs, islands and reeds. Bass aren't as plentiful in these lakes because these waters do not contain the plankton and algae that they like to feed on.

On the other hand, Southern lakes, especially shallow ones, breed some of the largest bass in North America. In these lakes, the bass will congregate in the shallows around the weedy and reedy areas. It's around these areas that you have the greatest probability for a strike, so cast your bait or lure in that direction.

Streams

Streams are often overlooked as a source for good bass fishing. They can be a great place to also find smallmouth bass, which prefer cooler waters over the larger and warmer bodies of water. The same principles apply in streams as in ponds - look for the sunken structures and along the steep banks. Anywhere that the weed beds change into rocky areas is an excellent location to find bass. One note of caution: bass will not congregate in flowing water, so don't waste your time in the middle of the stream in the current flow. Cast your line where the current is blocked, like large rocks of downed trees. This is where the large bass will be hiding out.

For the new angler, practice makes perfect. You don't need to start your fishing career on the big lakes. Try the smaller ponds to get accustomed to your new gear and to start to master your casting and retrieval techniques. Try different baits and see how they feel on the end of your line. Determine whether a spinner, streamer, soft bait or crankbait works best for you.

Trust me - you will catch plenty of bass along the way. They may not all be trophy winners, but you will learn to get a "feel" for a bass on the line. To help you gain a better feel for the fish, try using an ultra light combination rod and reel. Even the one pounders feel like trophy fish, and the experience you gain will be priceless.

Key Largo Flats & Backcountry Fishing Report 10-16-06

Summer is about gone and the days are getting cooler. Just right for fishing on the flats and in the backcountry.
In Florida Bay and Flamingo the Snook fishing has been good to us. The Reds have been cruising the flats. With the cooler weather and higher water the reds are closer to the mangroves. At least the bugs aren't out biting like they were in mid summer.

For the rest of October we're looking forward to catching Bonefish, Snook ,Reds and small Tarpon.

This past week fishing has been at its best. We even caught bull sharks along with jacks and trout.

To all the Trout fisherman, the season is closed November and December. It opens up January the 1st.

Snook season ends December the 15th and reopens February the 1st.

To the anglers that catch and release, closed season wont matter "Lets go fishing" and catch a "biggun".

The picture you see is an angler Buddy of mine who came down to fish and have A great time. I Know he did!

If you're into birds, the winter foul will be coming in on the flats to feed. You'll see Pink Flamingo mixed with the White Pelicans.

I'll be doing more TV shows coming up soon. Hopefully we'll give people an idea what its like to fish the flats and " look" for the fish, "site fishing".

If you're a fly fisherman you will love flats fishing for Bonefish or Reds and Snook.

Salmon Fishing Tips and Tricks

General salmon information and fishing tips:

1. Generally, the best times of the day are during the times when there is low light and so too, on cloudy days. On bright and sunny days, salmon will usually collect and assemble deep in the holes.

2. Take note that salmon do not feed while in the river. When they do strike, it is a behavior that is learned. Salmons are known to be predatory and aggressive when in the lake, up until they go into the river.

3. Set the hook by yanking downstream with your rod three times. To get a better set, pulling on the line with your free hand can help. Sometimes, when you lift the rod straight up, it will pull the fly out of the mouth of the salmon.

4. In order for the hook to go through the thick jaws of the salmon, you should always sharpen your hooks.

5. Fishing with a partner can be enjoyable and at the same time help each other to spot a salmon. While one is fishing, the other can be high up on the other side of the bank observing the reaction of the salmon and where exactly they are. Polarized glasses are very helpful when doing this and would bring satisfying results.

6. Finding a good hole where there are many salmon inside and you can fish there for the whole day!

7. Your weight as well as the length of the tippet should be adjusted so that it matches the holes depth and the depth of the fish. Your weight should not drag, but should only touch the bottom every now and then. Note that a tippet that is three feet long will set the fly six inches up to two feet off the bottom.

8. By adding a foam indicator at the top of your fly, you can get your fly higher in the water column.
