Fishing Reel - Important Tips

Many Anglers overlook their fishing reel from year to year. They simply throw their whole rib into a closet or leave it in the back of their vehicle all year long. Then when fishing season rolls around again, they grab their rig and go. Neglecting your fishing reel like this can cause big performance problems, and performance problems are not what you want while you're out fishing. Believe me, I know this from experience. If you take a few minutes after every fishing trip, and an hour of so a year, your fishing reel will stay in great shape and last for many years :

Wipe It Down - after every fishing excursion, take a minute or two to wipe your fishing reel down with a clean cloth. Just wiping the outside of the reel like this removes any dirt of sand that might have gotten on your rod while fishing. Over time, this can build up and cause problems.

Change Your Line - this tip is especially true with monofilament line, which is what I use. Some people will go for an entire fishing season without changing their fishing line. This amazes me. As an example, I change my line once a month or so during fishing season. The "fresher" your fishing line is the less resistance it provides for the fishing reel. Not only this, but the older the line, the more it will coil, and the less strong it will be.

Setting The Drag - You want your drag set tight enough for a hook set, but loose enough to come off of the fishing reel easily. Just pull the line off of the reel with your hand before throwing your first cast. If it pulls off fairly easily with a decent amount of resistance, it should be fine. After the hook set, adjust the drag accordingly. The drag on your fishing reel isn't like that chicken cooker. You don't just "set it and forget it". The drag on your reel should be adjusted as you feel the size of the fish.

A Spring Cleaning - At least once a year your fishing reel should be taken apart and cleaned and greased. This simple step, which takes about an hour of your time, will add years to the life of your fishing reel. Do a search for "fishing reel maintenance" to get instructions if needed, but the bottom line is that your fishing reel should be cleaned and greased at least once a year.

These simple tips will add years to the life of your fishing reels, and help their performance as well. The last thing you want to have happen is for your reel to not work properly when you happen to be fighting the fish of a lifetime. I've had my reel not work, while fighting a fish like this and let me tell you something, it's no fun at all. If there were any children within earshot of my screaming on that day they're still scarred. I was not a happy camper, or should I say angler. Just remember these simple tips and nothing like what happened to me will ever happen to you.

Who hasn't had a thought of just kicking back and taking up fishing as a sport or hobby? (They give a lot of money and other prizes in those fishing tournaments.) If not, it's time you did some thinking about it. Fishing is relaxing and it gets you out into the beautiful great outdoors where you feel as if you're one with nature. (Now I know you like that idea.) I find that there's nothing as great as sitting on the bank of a creek under a willow tree and leaving the stress of the world behind. This alone can add years to your life. There is also the exercise you get from walking to the fishing spot. I personally don't care much for just exercising to be exercising but a brisk walk to a fishing hole is great. It's balm for the soul and in today's stressful world, it's a great way to let off a little steam. It's also a great hobby for those of all ages. Kids love to fish, so after you've been out a few times, take a kid along for a day of fishing fun. You will find a great deal of joy in introducing a kid to the joy of fishing.



If you've never tried fishing, you don't know what you're missing. Not only does it bring you closer to nature, there's the thrill of the catch. You simply can't imagine the thrill of standing on the bank of a pond or stream, your rod bending under the weight of a good catch. - Family members or friends who are avid angler get them to take you along the next time they go fishing, experience is a good teacher. For this you will need some basic equipment, rod, reel, hooks and bait. Do not buy a lot of expensive gear until you determine whether or not you enjoy fishing.



- If you wish to take professional fishing lessons, check with guide services and fishing stores in your area. They can often provide you with the names of professionals who will teach you how to fish.



- Check with your local Conservation or wildlife service. Often there is a fishing day where beginners gather to learn the basics of fishing.



There is not a bad time to fish and you never know what you might catch. Certain species are more active near dawn and dusk when they feed. Others will bite any time of the day. Some species are more active at certain times of the year, but really you can fish all year round. If you live in a climate that has four seasons, you might consider taking up ice fishing at some point. Really the time of year you should fish all depends on the species you are after.



Fishing licenses are required in most locations. These can be purchased at fishing tackle stores, Conservation and Wildlife Services. Cost varies by location. Fishing licenses are not usually required for children. Check always the regulations. If you are planning to fish on private property, be sure to get permission from the owner. Entering someone's property to fish without permission is classed as trespassing. Be courteous and if permission is denied, move on.

Fly Fishing For Trout

Fly Fishing is such a traditional sport many refer to as an art form, and compared to other modes of fishing, incorporates so much to learn in terms of casting technique, and more particularly the study of the trout's diet, and their imitations, that it can distract anglers from focussing sufficiently on their quarry's habits and behaviour. If you want to catch more Trout, and particularly larger Trout, you need to know more about the Trout than you do about casting and their diet.

The deeper I looked, the more things just didn't make sense. I reared both Brown and Rainbow Trout in my lounge room aquarium and studied them closely. From atop steep banks of clear pools on the stream, I experimented and studied them.

There was finally but one conclusion I could make. We, as fly fishermen, to a large degree, have been kidding ourselves for a very long time. Looking realistically at many of the trout flies, it seemed that the trout must either be half blind, or quite stupid, to accept many of them as the insects being imitated. Either way, it detracted from the achievement of having deceived them.

The more I critically analyzed the whole routine of fly fishing, the more assumptions I recognised as having been made to compensate for our lack of understanding. At best, some of the assumptions may have been correct to some degree, but could never be proven or confirmed. At worst, some were just blatantly wrong.

These assumptions have been cycled for so long they have just been accepted as fact. The Trout have been considered 'Unpredictable' because their behaviour or actions didn't always fit what we would have expected when fly fishing. No-one, it seems, had ever thought about the possibility of their actions not matching our expectations because our beliefs could be flawed.

I started evaluating alternative possibilities. Gradually I put the puzzle together. Eventually, those long standing questions had answers. The trout behaviour then became extremely predictable. I started taking advantage of these findings. Having realized I didn't need to imitate anything to induce takes, I was able to construct flies which could do specific jobs for me rather than imitating anything.

With each of the situations I encountered on the water mastered, the results just automatically followed. I had seemingly mastered the sport of fly fishing.

How Can You Fish Without a Real Fishing Pole?

As a young girl, the only other kid in the neighborhood I had to play with was a boy my age that lived down the road from me. We lived in the country in a quiet neighborhood with a sheep farm down the road that had winding stream that ran behind their property and my neighbor's house as well. Needless to say, I learned to play with "boy toys" such as his farm toys, cars ,etc, and played Cowboys and Indians (that should give you a hint of what era!), and I was always the Indian for some reason!! For some reason, he never wanted to reciprocate in playing "house" or dressing dolls!!

However, we discovered a hobby that we both enjoyed! Fishing!! The creek behind his home was our playground and we spent hours wading, swimming, catching crawdads and fishing together. I never touched those crawdads! They had pinchers and looked scary! Ewww!

Once I got past touching those nasty squirming worms, and baiting my own hook (he wouldn't let me use his lures!), I really had fun fishing. We were about 9 years old and got along pretty good for a boy and a girl. He had his own fishing pole and neat looking lures, and I had none! There was an old fishing pole that his Dad had that I was barely allowed to use and when that fishing pole broke--I had nothing to fish with!!

My friend didn't feel sorry enough for me to let me use his fishing pole, so he and I started poking around in his Dad's work shop and found a long stick and some string which we tied to the end of the stick. Then for a hook, we used a nail and hammered it into a shape that we thought made a good hook. There it was...my homemade fishing rod!

I actually got a worm onto that nail and cast my line out into the creek at the deepest point I could find. Believe it or not...I actually caught a fish on that homemade fishing pole! Our parents were amazed! It wasn't a keeper; in fact it wasn't much beyond the minnow stage, but hey... I caught a fish!! That's what it was all about for us! We have went our separate ways in life and I often wonder if he remembers the home-made fishing pole we made that hot summer afternoon all those years ago.
