Cutthroat trout are native to the Western United States. Because they have lived and survived in isolated areas in most parts of the West, they have developed into several distinct sub-species and strains. They are usually a brownish gold color and have relatively large spots. The name cutthroat came from the obvious red mark at the lower part of their gills. Most of the time the hybrids have smaller spots than the cutthroats. They usually show a rainbow line but much less noticeable than the rainbow trout. The colors are more subdued. Normally the stomach of the cutbow is not as yellow as the cutthroat. Neither is the cut mark or red throat slash as noticeable on the cutbow as it is the cutthroat. Fly Fishing For Bonefish

Fly fishers like to nickname their prey, and bonefish are no exception. The bonefish is nicknamed the "Gray Ghost", and if you have ever witnessed these creatures in their Andros Island or Florida Key habitat you know they have earned this nickname. Perfectly camouflaged for their environment these creatures rarely give away their whereabouts easily. Easily for the novice that is, a good guide can seemingly see them in the abstract. And although I am not a huge guide proponent, preferring trial and error, there are times when a guide is a necessity; especially after having spent a nice sum on airfare and lodging. Not to mention the accoutrements required for catching this most worthy of fish.

The bonefish is worthy because of the flat out, jaw dropping, blistering runs it can make; stripping off yards of line at mind boggling speed. One great bonefish run can make up for hours of frustration. If you are not used to casting forty yards into a stiff wind, having to make pinpoint accuracy out of these casts, and then knowing where all your line is in relation to your feet, then your first experience with these creatures are bound to produce some frustration. But it all will peel away like stress at a spa, when you hear your reel sing in the highest pitch imaginable, greedily feeding line to that running bonefish.

In actuality bonefish do two nice things for the novice fly fisher, or the experienced trout fly fisher getting their salt shoes wet for the first time. One, they occasionally do something called 'tailing'; which means they have their tails upright out of the water, while searching for food; although tails can often be mistaken for mangroves or weeds.

The other 'nice' habit they possess is that of creating 'muds'. Hordes of bonefish school together and create a muddy area to form a protection against sharks or barracudas. Although technically casting into these muds has very little to do with the actual flats fly fishing experience, they do give the first timer a taste of hooking a bonefish. These fish tend to be small, 2 pounds or so, an occasional six pounder and up can be hooked this way.

A big bonefish is a double digit one, over ten pounds. And this is ten pounds of very athletic fish indeed. So be prepared, although some anglers prefer a six weight rod, most prefer an eight weight. Also remember you will be required to cast into the wind and distances of at least forty feet, a fast action eight weight is highly recommended. A good guide will help you modify your cast for the wind. There are plenty of bonefish lines on the market, and don't forget the extra backing needed as well. For this reason a large arbor reel is recommended.

While most bonefishing is done aboard the deck of a boat, for obvious reasons, you can cover more ground and have the advantage of height. Wading is also done. Sometimes getting away for a quiet few hours of wading, reminds you of the real reason you might be there; namely natural beauty and solitude. But after awhile, wading can also remind you how exhausting it is. For better results take your fishing partner, if not a guide, and trade off casting and sighting fish. It is great practice, and very enjoyable when done at a medium pace.

For bonefish flies, , one does not have to break the bank or cover every possibility. As mentioned above technique is of most importance. However, there are some must haves, those include the Gotcha Fly, Crazy Charlie, Clouser minnows, Raghead Crab, and a Mantis Shrimp.

Despite all the intimidation factors, the bonefish really are a great species to get your feet wet on when attempting saltwater fly fishing for the first time. The sight fishing aspect is similar to dry fly trout fly fishing, and the size of the fish and equipment is not a huge jump. One of the great rewards of today's fly fishing is the vast variety out there, and it is one of the least realized aspects of our great passion.

The deep waters of Lake Tanganyika are rich in big-game fish. The waters of this deep lake are only just beginning to gain the world-wide fame which means these waters are less populated with boats and fishing conditions are absolutely perfect. Lake Tanganyika is the longest lake in the world, and at 1,433 meters is the second deepest in the world. Amazingly the lakes lowest point is 642m below sea level; and it holds a volume of water seven times that of Lake Victoria. For divers as well as anglers, this is paradise, with over 350 species of fish, offers some of the finest lake game fishing in Africa. Some of the game fish to be found here include the goliath, tigerfish and Nile Perch.

After a big storm I have seen people body surfing with waves sometimes reaching up to six meters. This is for the enthusiast only - I think - as I have tried to body surf but buoyancy was a problem for me in the fresh water.

Many fishermen come to African lakes looking to land a tigerfish; many claims are made by operators in Southern Africa that this fish is found only in Southern Africa countries - this is untrue as these game fish are also found here in Tanzania. The tigerfish is well-known for its powerful tail and savage teeth; and is claimed by some to be the world's most exciting freshwater sport-fish. I think this is mainly because of the drama of the whole experience the jarring strikes, lightning runs and spectacular leaps; a typical tigerfish weighs 3-8 pounds, with 10-20 pounds being landed from time to time.

In contrast the shallow waters of Lake Victoria are home to legendary Nile Perch growing up to 300lbs, and even the novice fisherman can be encouraged by casting off a jetty to catch abundant tilapia. Nile Perch of over 80 kg have been caught; the main method of fishing in the lake is trolling with lures. Apart from the Nile perch, local tilapia of up to 5kg have been caught on bait. I have seen catfish of over 50kg caught often.

The Guinness Book of World Records lists an incredible 232kg Nile perch caught by local fishermen on Lake Victoria. Another way to fish is from the shore - there are few un-spoilt places, I am sure, in the world where in fresh or salt water it is possible to land fish in the 20 - 100lb plus category.

Sea fishing in one of the most exciting areas of Tanzania is in an area called Kilwa in southern Tanzania - close to the Mozambique border - this is a blue water fishing paradise. For those who wish to experience the unbelievable thrill of saltwater fly fishing this is the place to head. Many different species can be teased up to a fly and the rush of playing a big fish on light gear is an unforgettable experience.

Fishing is best in the months of August, September and October. Silver service fly-camps are set up on an evening along the coastline and trips include all fishing, full-board accommodation, beer, table wine, soft drinks, and transfers to and from Dar-es-Salaam to Kilwa.

Do You Really Need A Fishing Guide?

"Do I really need a guide?" is one of the most frequently asked questions from anglers going on their first fishing trip to a remote lake. It's impossible to accurately answer that question with a "yes" or a "no", but we can give you the information you need to know to answer the question yourself.

Guides can frequently be worth having as long as you know just exactly what you're getting.

For example, hiring a guide is no guarantee that you're going to catch a ton of trophy fish. The guide will take you to the places known to have fish, but catching them is still up to you.

If you don't know what you're doing, the guide can only help you so much. But, that said, if that's the case, a guide may be well worth it to you.

Since you will be arriving at a lake you've never been on before, and you only have a few days to catch fish... a guide can really be a big help. Without a guide, you could spend several days just trying to find out where the fish are.

Also, keep in mind that most guides are great anglers themselves. They spend all spring and summer on the lake and surely know what works and what doesn't.

Here are some things to discuss with any potential guide to give you a feel for whether or not you might want to hire him:

-The type of fish you want to catch -Whether you're looking to catch lots of fish, or just trophy sized fish -Has the guide ever fished for the species you're after? -What technique will the guide expect you to use?

This is what you'll typically get when you hire a guide:

-Expert advice on the best locations to fish -Expert tips on how to best catch your fish -A deftly prepared, delicious shore lunch

You must decide if the above is worth paying the price for a guide.

But another option to consider is that you can hire a guide for just a day or two (be up front about this) and then use his (or her) advice on what to do the rest of your fishing trip. This will save you some money and still get you that expert advice you're looking for.

Now, if you're going on a fly-in fishing trip to a lake that you know (from your research and talking to others) is chock full of fish... you probably don't need a guide! There, I even answered your original question for you.

That's because many of the remote lakes have so many fish that even a beginner couldn't help catching all they want.

How much does a guide cost?

You can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $200 per day plus a tip of around $25 per person.

So, it simply becomes a matter of how much help a guide can be to you, and whether you're willing to pay for the service.

There, now you can decide if you want to hire a fishing guide.

Fishing in Salt Water

There will always be challenges whether one decides to fish either in the river or in the open sea. The important thing to remember is to have patience waiting for the fish and doing your best to catch it when it appears.

To be able to fish, a person needs to get a fishing license since this is a requirement by law and the regulations regarding fishing varies from one state to the other.

The first thing one needs for salt water fishing is a boat. It can range from a simple row boat to a yacht. The size of this vessel depends on how many people will join the trip.

For people who will do it in-shore, a 15 foot sailboat that comes with a cuddy forward to serve as a shelter when it rains should do the job. The boat should not be heavy and yet adequately sturdy to not be swayed by the action of strong waves or some bumps on the beach or on the rocks.

One should always try the edges of the perimeter first instead of plopping bait or lure in the middle. This is because it will scare the other fish away. By going through the sides first, one will have a better chance of catching unsuspecting fish in the middle.

If one decides to go "down below" some time, a cod-line is a necessity for everybody to enjoy saltwater fishing. A perch-line will also be good and if it's time for mackerel fishing, a mackerel jig will be an excellent help.

The right time to start salt water fishing is on the ebb tide. This should be during an early time of the morning to ensure that the trip will be a productive one. This will put the tide in one's favor and if the wind is light or not fair, this will also help in going home quickly.

The best place to start fishing is going to a fishing ground that is well known to the locals.

Many anglers who are too impatient move from one spot to another which at times make these people miss a hotspot further decreasing the chances of catching fish. It is advisable to cast out a couple of times before moving on using different types of bait. This should be done from the shallowest to the deepest point.

Sharks in the area can disrupt people from catching fish. By pouring some fish blood on a paper towel or newspaper and rolling it into a ball then casting it overboard, sharks will follow the current and leave the area increasing the chances of catching fish.
